Mulch Installation

Mulch Installation in Virginia Beach

Fresh mulch does more for the look of a house than almost anything else you can do in a day. It also does real work: it holds moisture in sandy soil, keeps roots cooler in summer, and slows down the weeds that would otherwise move into every open patch of dirt.

The difference between a good mulch job and a bad one is the prep. We clear the beds, cut a clean edge where the line has faded, and then lay mulch to an even depth. The result looks sharp the day we finish and still looks intentional a few months later.

Mulch installation starts from $120, depending on bed size and how much prep the beds need. Signature and Estate members save 10%.

What a LOMAR mulch install includes

  • Beds cleared of weeds, leaves and debris before any mulch goes down
  • Bed edges cut and redefined where needed so there's a clean line between lawn and bed
  • Old mulch raked and broken up so the new layer doesn't mat
  • Mulch delivered and installed at an even two- to three-inch depth
  • Mulch pulled back from tree trunks, shrub stems and the house foundation
  • Walks and driveway blown clean when we're done

Why mulch is worth doing right

In Virginia Beach summers, bare soil dries out fast and bakes. A proper layer of mulch keeps moisture where the roots are, keeps soil temperatures steadier, and maintains healthy plants and shrubs through the hottest stretch of the year. It gives new life to beds that have started to look tired.

Too much mulch causes its own problems. Piling it against trunks — the classic 'mulch volcano' — traps moisture against the bark and invites rot and insects. Mounding it against siding gives termites a bridge into the house. We keep it at the right depth and pull it back where it shouldn't touch.

The edge is what makes it look finished. A sharp, cut bed line keeps mulch in the bed and grass out of it. That's why redefining edges where needed is part of our mulch service, not an upsell.

How LOMAR handles it

Our process

  1. 01

    Look at the beds

We estimate bed area and note anything that needs extra prep — overgrown edges, heavy weeds, buried old fabric.

  2. 02

    Prep

Weeds and debris out, edges cut where needed, old mulch loosened.

  3. 03

    Install

Mulch spread evenly and kept clear of trunks, stems and siding.

  4. 04

    Clean up

Hard surfaces blown clean and the beds checked once more before we leave.

Mulch in Virginia Beach yards

Most homeowners here mulch in spring, after the pine pollen has settled and before the summer heat. That timing gives you the full benefit of moisture retention when you need it most. A lighter fall top-up can freshen beds that took a beating from summer storms.

Sandy soil in much of 23451 and 23454 drains quickly, so mulch makes a noticeable difference in how often beds need water. Near the oceanfront, salt wind and heavy rain can thin a layer faster than inland, and a yearly refresh keeps coverage where it should be.

Our crews also see a lot of beds with years of mulch stacked on top of each other, sometimes over landscape fabric that's no longer doing anything. If your beds are already deep, we'll tell you — sometimes the right move is raking and edging with only a thin top layer, not another full install.

Common questions

How deep should mulch be?
About two to three inches total. Deeper than that can keep water from reaching roots and encourage rot.
Do you remove the old mulch?
Usually we loosen it and install over it. If beds are already too deep, we'll recommend removal or a thinner top layer.
When is the best time to mulch?
Spring is most common in Virginia Beach. Fall works well too, especially after a summer cleanup.
Is edging included?
Yes. Beds are cut and edged where needed as part of every mulch installation.
