Fall Cleanup

Fall Yard Cleanup in Virginia Beach

Leaf drop in Virginia Beach doesn't happen all at once. Maples and sweetgums go first in late October, the oaks hang on into December, and pines shed needles in between. Left alone, those layers mat down on the lawn and fill every bed on the property.

A fall cleanup clears all of it, tidies the beds and puts the yard to bed for winter so it comes back cleanly in spring. It's one visit that saves a lot of raking — and a lot of thin spots in the lawn next year.

Fall cleanups start from $195, depending on property size and tree cover. A Fall Cleanup is included each year with the Signature and Estate plans.

What a fall cleanup includes

  • Leaves cleared from the lawn, beds, along fences and in corners
  • Beds cleared of leaves, weeds and debris
  • Spent perennials and annuals cut back
  • Fallen branches and storm debris collected
  • A final cut with leaves mulched or collected as needed
  • All debris hauled off the property, walks and driveway blown clean

Why leaves shouldn't sit through winter

A light scattering of leaves can be mulched into the lawn. A thick, wet layer can't. It blocks sunlight, holds moisture against the grass and creates the perfect conditions for disease. Fescue that was just overseeded in September is especially vulnerable — new seedlings smothered by leaves in November often don't make it to spring.

Beds full of leaves become winter homes for pests and give weeds a head start. Cleaning them out in fall means a much lighter spring cleanup and a clean base for mulch.

It also matters for drainage. Leaves wash into gutters, storm drains and low spots, and in neighborhoods that already hold water after heavy rain, that adds up.

Fall in Virginia Beach yards

Because the oaks here hold their leaves so late, a cleanup done in early November often needs to be repeated. We generally aim for late November or early December so one visit catches most of the drop. Heavily wooded properties — common around Great Neck, Linkhorn Park and the Lynnhaven area — may benefit from two visits.

Fall is also the tail end of hurricane season. If a late storm comes through, branches and debris get folded into the cleanup instead of sitting in the yard until spring.

If you had your lawn aerated and overseeded in September, keeping leaves off the new grass through October and November is one of the most important things you can do to protect that investment. Our weekly mowing visits help manage leaves until the full cleanup.

Common questions

When is the best time for a fall cleanup?
Late November into early December for most Virginia Beach properties, once the oaks have dropped most of their leaves.
Can't you just mulch the leaves into the lawn?
A light layer, yes — we do that during weekly mowing. Heavy layers need to be removed or they'll smother the grass.
Do you take the leaves away?
Yes. All leaves and debris are hauled off the property.
Is a fall cleanup part of any plan?
Yes. A Fall Cleanup is included each year with Signature and Estate, and available as an add-on for Essential and Month-to-Month customers.
