Bed Weeding

Hand Weeding for Virginia Beach Landscape Beds

A freshly mowed lawn next to a bed full of crabgrass and nutsedge still looks unkept. Beds are where weeds win quietly — a few sprouts in May turn into a carpet by July, and by then they're seeding into the mulch for next year.

LOMAR's bed weeding is physical work, done by hand. We pull weeds from your mulch beds, borders and the spaces around shrubs, get as much of the root as the soil allows, and leave the bed clean and defined. There are no sprays involved.

Hand weeding starts from $75 per visit, depending on bed size and how established the weeds are. Signature and Estate customers receive 10% off.

What a weeding visit includes

  • Weeds pulled by hand from mulch beds, borders and planting areas
  • Roots removed wherever the soil allows, not just the tops snapped off
  • Grass creeping in from the lawn pulled back out of the bed
  • Weeds cleared from around shrub bases, mailboxes and bed corners
  • Mulch raked back into place where pulling disturbed it
  • All pulled material bagged and hauled off, hard surfaces blown clean

We do not apply herbicides or pre-emergent products. Weeding is mechanical removal only.

Why pulling on a schedule beats one big cleanup

Most bed weeds in this area — crabgrass, spurge, nutsedge, bermuda creeping in from the lawn — are easiest to remove when they're young. A weed pulled at two inches comes out whole. The same weed at ten inches has a root system that breaks off and resprouts, and it has probably already dropped seed.

That's why regular visits through the growing season keep beds cleaner with less disturbance than an occasional overhaul. Each pass is lighter, the mulch stays where it belongs, and the bed never gets to the point where it needs to be stripped and started over.

Clean beds also protect the plants in them. Weeds compete with shrubs and perennials for water, and in sandy soil that drains fast, that competition shows up quickly in the heat of summer.

How LOMAR handles it

Our process

  1. 01

    Look at the beds

We note bed size, current weed pressure and anything you want left alone — volunteer plants, seedlings, ground covers.

  2. 02

    Pull

Weeds removed by hand, roots included where possible, working bed by bed.

  3. 03

    Reset

Mulch raked back, edges tidied and surfaces blown off.

  4. 04

    Repeat as needed

Weeding can be scheduled alongside your weekly visit as often as the beds call for.

Weeds in Virginia Beach beds

The long, humid growing season here gives weeds a lot of time. Germination starts in March, peaks through May and June, and keeps going well into October. Nutsedge in particular loves the damp spots that show up in neighborhoods with a high water table, and it's one weed that has to come out with its tuber or it returns within weeks.

Many yards in 23451 and 23454 have beds that border lawns of bermuda or zoysia, both of which spread by runners. Without a defined bed edge and regular pulling, that grass moves into the mulch every summer. Pairing weeding with a sharp bed edge — and a fresh mulch layer once a year — is the most effective way to hold that line.

If your beds have gone a season or two without attention, the first visit takes longer. After that, regular weeding keeps the work light.

Common questions

Do you spray weeds?
No. All weeding is done by hand. We don't apply herbicides or pre-emergents.
How often should beds be weeded?
It depends on the beds, but during peak season every few weeks keeps weeds small and easy to pull. We'll suggest a rhythm after seeing the property.
Will the weeds come back?
Some will — seeds blow in and germinate all season. Regular pulling removes them before they mature and drop more seed, so pressure drops over time.
Should I mulch after weeding?
A fresh layer of mulch after a thorough weeding helps shade out new seedlings. Many customers pair the two in spring.
