Spring Cleanup

Spring Yard Cleanup in Virginia Beach

By late February, most Virginia Beach yards are carrying a winter's worth of leftovers — oak leaves blown into corners, sticks and pine cones from nor'easters, matted beds, and ornamental grasses that have gone brown and floppy. None of it is dramatic on its own, but together it makes a property look neglected right when everything else starts turning green.

A spring cleanup resets the yard in a single visit so weekly mowing can start on a clean slate. It's also the best time to get beds edged and ready for fresh mulch.

Spring cleanups start from $175, depending on property size and how much debris has built up. A spring property refresh is included each year with the Estate plan.

What a spring cleanup includes

  • Leaves, sticks, pine cones and storm debris cleared from lawn and beds
  • Beds cleared of weeds and debris
  • Bed edges recut and redefined where needed
  • Ornamental grasses and dead perennial growth cut back
  • Winter-damaged branches removed from shrubs
  • Lawn lightly cleaned up ahead of the first mowing
  • All debris hauled away and hard surfaces blown clean

Why a spring cleanup is worth scheduling

Leaves and debris left on a lawn through early spring block light right when cool-season grass is trying to green up. Matted spots stay thin and yellow, and they're often where weeds get started.

Beds are easier to fix now than later. Weeds that sprout in March are small and pull out cleanly; by May they've set roots and seed. Getting beds cleared and edged early also means mulch can go down before the summer heat, when it does the most good.

There's also a practical reason. The first mow of the season goes faster and looks better on a yard that's already clean, and you're not paying for a crew to pick up sticks on every weekly visit in April.

Spring in Virginia Beach yards

Spring arrives early here. Fescue usually starts growing in March, and the yard can go from dormant to needing a mow in a couple of weeks. That gives a short window to clean up before weekly service begins, which is why we start scheduling cleanups in late February.

April brings the pine pollen. That yellow film on cars and patios also coats beds and lawns, and it's one reason some homeowners hold off on mulching until it settles. We can split the visit — cleanup and edging early, mulch after the pollen — if you'd like.

In 23451 and 23454, winter nor'easters are often a bigger source of debris than the fall leaf drop. Branches, palm fronds near the oceanfront, and wind-blown leaves from neighbors' trees tend to collect along fences and in beds. Spring is the time to clear all of it out.

Common questions
